FOLKS – if you’re in the Athens/Georgia area today, please join Missy and fellow zinesters, JOE CARLOUGH and KATIE HAEGELE, as well as musicians K & KEIKO (KISHI BASHI!) at AVID BOOKSHOP tonight at 6pm. Joe and Katie are on a weekend-long tour from Philadelphia, sharing and reading from their self-published oeuvre. Missy will be opening with a few readings from her comic-journals, and she’ll also have a handful of her zines and books for sale. Festivities will close with music from the amazing K & Keiko Ishibashi. We would love to see you all this Sunday evening!
Geez Louise, it’s been forever since we’ve done a WEEKEND WIND-DOWN post…been a rough time trying to get back on that horse! So without further ado, we’re flashing all the way back to July 18th…that Saturday, we headed out to THE HIGH MUSEUM in Atlanta to see the ALEX KATZ exhibition, as well as the “SPRAWL!” show, featuring the museum’s recent purchase of locally-created drawings and illustrations. But first, we decided to take a little detour to check out the ATLANTA ZINE FAIR at the EYEDRUM in downtown Atlanta…
It was hot and sweaty as we made our way through the warren of little shopfronts and galleries that make up the Eyedrum complex. There were talks and workshops happening in a few of them and those rooms were filled wall-to-wall with people. We finally found the main room where all the ZINE action was happening and we were told that even more sellers could be found on the next street over at the MAMMAL GALLERY…
We loved the woven STICKS AND BRANCHES in the lobby that made up the entrance into the gallery:
Across the street from the Mammal Gallery, there was an art exhibition going on in another little gallery in conjunction with the zine fair. The exhibition, by artist NINA DOLGIN, investigated the relationship between the perceived memory of her childhood and her re-constructed childhood composed of artifacts from that time period – photos, videos, and physical souvenirs from a bygone era. In our photos, the actual artist can be seen wearing a black dress…it was a trip seeing the adult artist standing near an over-size cut out of her childhood self:
We left the zine fair with a few new zines and this EVIL-BANISHING FLY SWATTER…it reminded me of that scene in the original “Amityville Horror” movie with all the flies gathering on the windscreen…and of course, the Depeche Mode song, “Fly On The Windscreen”…I had to get it:
We were hella thirsty by the time we got to THE HIGH. So we spent the first 20 minutes there just re-hydrating and cooling off from the summer heat before heading up to see even more art:
Having recently been to PARADISE GARDENS, we had a new appreciation for the gallery dedicated to the works of REVEREND HOWARD FINSTER:
The museum purchased art from our friend LESLIE SNIPES to add to their permanent collection. What an honor! We had featured some of Leslie’s works in our inaugural exhibition at MINI GALLERY almost two years ago…crazy. The two pieces that the museum collected Leslie are the big black LEAF-LIKE SHAPES seen in the top center of this display:
Here’s Leslie and Missy posing underneath her works:
On our way out of the museum, Missy couldn’t help but play on the SPINNING SCULPTURES in the museum’s courtyard:
We capped the night off with dinner at our most favorite Atlanta restaurant, CAFE SUNFLOWER. Missy couldn’t help but start things off with this funky drink called “Turn The Beet Around” (Missy loves her some beets, LOL). We had these delicious fried avocado tacos as an appetizer (BEST TACOS EVER), and then I had some sort of chicken-fried “steak” dish made out of seitan (D E L E C T A B L E) while Missy had a stuffed squash. Even after all that, we still ended up ordering dessert, knowing full well that we would be bringing most of it home with us. I guess walking around all day long without lunch definitely built up our appetite…
