London – Day Three, Part Two: Soho, Parliament, Trafalgar Square

LONDON 0969

LONDON 0970

After lunch in Covent Garden, we walked to SOHO. Then, Alessi lured us into SOHO’S ORIGINAL BOOK SHOP, Soho’s oldest bookshop. They specialized in bargain books and…ahem…adult-style books, magazines, and paraphernalia…

This is the street where the band OASIS photographed the cover to their album, “(What’s The Story) Morning Glory?”…Missy and I somehow managed to stay out of the two record stores on that street:

From Carnaby Street, Alessi showed us where to find the LIBERTY OF LONDON department store, London’s premier purveyor of fine home goods and gifts, mostly known for their collection of floral prints on fabric. After exhaustively perusing multiple floors filled to the brim with all kinds of wonderful things, we finally bid farewell to Alessi and then hopped on The Tube to the LONDON EYE…

We stopped to use the loo at the nearby LONDON AQUARIUM and ran into LUCIANO PAVOROTTI:

Missy took out her TRAVEL TOFU BABY for some photos along the THAMES RIVER, with BIG BEN and PARLIAMENT in the background. In full tourist mode, we slowly made our way across WESTMINSTER BRIDGE towards the clock tower:

From Big Ben and Parliament, we made our way over to the impressive WESTMINSTER ABBEY, where we marveled at all the architectural and sculptural details. Unfortunately, the Abbey seemed to be closed for renovations so we went into a nearby chapel instead. We were relieved to find an outlet under one of the pews where we could recharge Jean’s phone, which had just run out of power. HALLELUJAH! A MIRACLE! we exclaimed. We took the opportunity to rest our weary legs while the phone recharged. Missy took some time to light some candles for our loved ones…

After recharging at Westminster Abbey, we rushed over to TRAFALGAR SQUARE as the sun started to set. The last time I was here, the whole square was filled with protesters…now it was filled with tourists enjoying a lazy afternoon. On foot, we circled back to SOHO where we had dinner and ended our adventure…

We finally had FISH & CHIPS in England, albeit the vegetarian version. It was in the SECRET TEA ROOM above the COACH & HORSES pub in Soho, one of the best places to find vegetarian pub grub. It was the perfect end to a long day of exploring:

London – Day Three, Part One: Covent Garden

LONDON 0866

LONDON 0869

A year ago today, Missy and I got up early and took THE TUBE to COVENT GARDEN with the express goal of checking out the MOOMIN SHOP there. Needless to say, we spent quite a bit of time there taking photos and looking at every bit of merchandise in the store. It was a veritable Moomin Mecca…

We stopped to have lunch at FOOD FOR THOUGHT and met up with our friend ALESSI (who is a brilliant singer-songwriter, btw…see HERE)…Food For Thought had been a mainstay in Covent Garden since the 70s, but we were sad to hear that they had closed within the past year. We were lucky that we got to experience their excellent food…
