At long last – some photos from the SPRING SHOWCASE at the KRISTEN ASHLEY ARTIST SHOP, here in Athens, Georgia. The exhibition was up from mid-April to mid-June and I’m only now getting around to posting photos from the installation to the opening event…
MISSY used her allotted wall space by painting a cloudy sky inhabited by LITTLE PLUSH FLUFFY CLOUDS, with a FABRIC KITE flown over a HAPPY LITTLE MOUNTAIN RANGE by a CUTE GREEN BUNNY. Oh, and she made a bowl-full of ONE-INCH BUTTONS to boot:
Last summer, our friend was scheduling the art shows for the Grit, a local favorite restaurant, and I told him I would like to have a show there. So, since then, I had ideas and dreams of how I thought my art show would look on the walls at the Grit.
Over time, I had different idea and sketches as to what the themes would be, and how large or small I wanted to work. I usually work fairly small, but the walls there are so big, I needed to think about that in relation to the work. Some of my artist friends said I needed to work big, which for a miniaturist, like myself, was a nervous thought.
I also do not usually love making backgrounds, but I tried some here. These are paintings that did not quite fit with my vision, but they were still good to work on and explore possibility.
A lot of times, I like to work on my art at lunch, just to break from the computer or whatever I was doing that day.
So there you have it, some of my drawings and process from my art show!
This past Sunday was the close of the ATHENS ARCANA: A CONTEMPORARY TAROT show, at ATHICA (Athens Institute for Contemporary Art) – it was an art show featuring 78 local artists (including our very own MISSY KULIK), each illustrating one of 78 cards in a standard TAROT CARD DECK, culminating in the manufacture of actual tarot card decks featuring said art that are now available for purchase from ATHICA.
Well, Missy and I were not able to attend the closing event this past weekend, but we were there for the opening reception several weeks ago…
Our friend Dena showed up with her friend who was dressed up as a TAROT CARD. She also had a PUPPET on each hand, puppets that Dena made. Needless to say, she made quite the impression:
There were a handful of TAROT CARD READERS there who, for a small fee, would read your cards. Everyone was raving about this one lady at the back of the gallery, so we waited patiently in line for about half-an-hour just to have Missy’s cards read by her. Now, I’m as skeptical as the next doubter, and I understand fully how COLD READINGS work…BUT…this lady brought up stuff that only Missy and I knew of and understood, very specific details that couldn’t in any way possible be ascertained from a cold reading. It was downright spooky! But it was also surprisingly inspiring and therapeutic at the same time:
The first card Missy pulled was “EXHAUSTION”…the cards don’t lie!
The last card Missy pulled was “LAZINESS”, which was tied full-circle to the very first card that was pulled – “EXHAUSTION”…Missy was told that she needed to allow herself to be LAZY and to not take on too many projects, which was making her overextended and EXHAUSTED…like, whoa. The cards really, really, really don’t lie:
Missy poses with the illustration she did for the card called “TEMPERANCE”:
