Happy 2015!

PD 0785

HAPPY NEW YEAR, everyone! Last night I had on my POLKA DOT SOCKS and POLKA DOT SHIRT on to ring in the new year. It’s a Filipino superstition to wear polka dots during the transition from the old year to the new one, one of many New Year’s superstitions passed on to me and my sisters from our parents. It is supposed to bring good fortune – the polka dots represent COINS, so obviously, the more polka dots you wear, the better. Other Filipino superstitions include making sure you have money in your pockets at the stroke of midnight, eating rice noodles (for long life), and banging on pots and pans to scare away bad spirits and demons…

Hundreds of miles away, up in Pittsburgh, Missy was also wearing polka dots on New Year’s Eve. She had on a polka dot dress with tone-on-tone polka dot tights. After a long-distance game of Dungeons & Dragons with Missy and her family, we FACETIMED for a bit afterwards…she demonstrated how she could hang upside-down from her brother’s pull-up bar:

Weekend Wind-Down #179

DISNEYLAND 2118

DISNEYLAND 2134

For this week’s Christmas-themed Weekend Wind-Down, we’re flashing back all the way to December 2007. These photos taken during a parade at DISNEYLAND, have been languishing in my Flickr photostream since before the existence of this blog…what better time to share these images than now?

At the time, my sister, Cynthia, was working for the Disney corporation as a tax specialist. She was a week away from starting a new job with another company and told us that if we wanted to go to Disneyland for FREE, that she could hook us up. So, on a whim, we took a whirlwind weekend trip from to California. We went straight from the airport to Disneyland and got there just in time to catch their Christmas parade. Freakish storm clouds loomed overhead, making the whole scene even more surreal…but luckily, the rain never came…

Merry Christmas 2014

TREE 3079

For sure, Missy and I have enough decorations and ornaments stashed away to deck out a full-sized tree. BUT…we have this little table top FIBER-OPTIC CHRISTMAS TREE which we pull out of the closet every year, and only so many decorations will fit on the tree. So this time every year, we choose a theme in order to limit the number of ornaments we use. The go-to for the past couple of years has been our collection of VINTAGE ORNAMENTS AND DECORATIONS and this year was no exception…

Missy has these little vintage DEER ORNAMENTS that were given to her by her friend, Jordan. They belonged to his family back in the day and he had drawn all over them with a marker when he was a little kid:

This flocked vintage MRS. CLAUS ornament was culled from my family’s collection. There’s a matching flocked SANTA that always rides in this little sleigh that we perch on top of our house-shaped curio display:

Missy’s absolutely-most-favorite ornament from the collection – a little plush SNOWMAN WITH BOWTIE that was a hand-me-down from her Grandmother:
