Athens Arcana

TAROT 2776

This past Sunday was the close of the ATHENS ARCANA: A CONTEMPORARY TAROT show, at ATHICA (Athens Institute for Contemporary Art) – it was an art show featuring 78 local artists (including our very own MISSY KULIK), each illustrating one of 78 cards in a standard TAROT CARD DECK, culminating in the manufacture of actual tarot card decks featuring said art that are now available for purchase from ATHICA.

Well, Missy and I were not able to attend the closing event this past weekend, but we were there for the opening reception several weeks ago…

Our friend Dena showed up with her friend who was dressed up as a TAROT CARD. She also had a PUPPET on each hand, puppets that Dena made. Needless to say, she made quite the impression:

There were a handful of TAROT CARD READERS there who, for a small fee, would read your cards. Everyone was raving about this one lady at the back of the gallery, so we waited patiently in line for about half-an-hour just to have Missy’s cards read by her. Now, I’m as skeptical as the next doubter, and I understand fully how COLD READINGS work…BUT…this lady brought up stuff that only Missy and I knew of and understood, very specific details that couldn’t in any way possible be ascertained from a cold reading. It was downright spooky! But it was also surprisingly inspiring and therapeutic at the same time:

The last card Missy pulled was “LAZINESS”, which was tied full-circle to the very first card that was pulled – “EXHAUSTION”…Missy was told that she needed to allow herself to be LAZY and to not take on too many projects, which was making her overextended and EXHAUSTED…like, whoa. The cards really, really, really don’t lie:

Blast From The Past: California Design x Jeff Koons

VAYCAY 9718

After experiencing amazing art from Tim Burton and Ai Weiwei (see previous blog post), we checked out even more great stuff at LACMA (LOS ANGELES COUNTY MUSEUM OF ART). We went into another cool exhibit called CALIFORNIA DESIGN, featuring modern art and design spanning between the 30s and 60s.

Missy loves AIRSTREAM trailers and this shiny one was no exception:

After we looked at the California Design exhibit, we took a tour of some of LACMA’s permanent collection. One room had these enormous RICHARD SERRA sculptures. They were so big you couldn’t even really photograph them, just photograph being IN them:

Another room had all these amazing JEFF KOONS sculptures, many of which we had only previously seen in text books and magazines:

In another part of the museum was an exhibition featuring a retrospective of work by the latino art collective known as ASCO:

We capped the night off heading over to Japantown, looking for a place to have dinner, but not before getting a bunch of treats to take back home with us.

We saw this restaurant called MADE IN MOM…i think something got lost in translation:

Couldn’t help but stop in and get MACARONS from this hip little place inside the mall:

I bought this funny EATING UTENSILS KIT from the japanese “dollar store” in the mall there…how could I not? Look at how sad those kids look!

Lastly, we couldn’t resist getting cream puffs from BEARD PAPA’S…especially with the HELLO KITTY crossover promo they had going on:

Paper Covers Rock

ART ROX 0431

Missy and I were lucky enough to FINALLY catch the awe-inspiring PAPER COVERS ROCK exhibit at the LYNDON HOUSE ART CENTER, curated by ART ROCKS ATHENS (ART ROX ATH), our very own “Athens’ art and music preservation society”. We saw the exhibit on it’s very last day back in July, and we were also lucky enough to have the show all to ourselves…

ART ROX 0377

The show focused on the Athens music scene spanning the ten years between 1975 and 1985, as documented through various posters, flyers, photographs, and other various bits and pieces of ephemera…all the bands from that bountiful era of music were represented – R.E.M., B-52’s, Pylon, Love Tractor, etc. etc., but focused heavily on the B-52’s…perhaps because of all the bands from that time, they were the most visually stunning…
