The annual BULLDOG INN ART SHOW is tomorrow night and we couldn’t be more excited. We blogged about the one we went to TWO YEARS AGO, which was totally surreal, bizarre, and a whole lot of fun. We went to last year’s Bulldog Inn Art Show as well, but, because we were preoccupied with running the MINI GALLERY at the time, we never got around to blogging about it…until now.
The art show is held at the titular Bulldog Inn, which is a seedy and rundown motel at the outskirts of Athens, Georgia. Every year, for the past handful of years, artists rent rooms from the Bulldog Inn and transform them into performance art and/or installation art pieces…unbeknownst to the regular customers who had the fortune/misfortune of renting a room on the same night, which adds to the edginess of the show. The mixing and mingling of artists, patrons, students, hipsters, townies, celebrities, movers, shakers, fakers, and various ne’er-do-wells adds to the spectacle of the night.
The first thing we saw was this “station” where you could trade a drawing for a piece organic fruit or vegetable. Missy traded a freshly-done drawing of TOFU BABY for a banana, which prompted some folks to take photos of Missy posing with her drawing and banana:
STEVEN TRIMMER and friends (I think KILLICK? and one other musician I don’t know) performing experimental music in one room:
some live-action drawing happening in the window of one other room:
LATTICEWORKS built an entire façade over the entrance to their installation:
The FLEABAG CIRCUS room featured SLACK LINERS, HOOP DANCERS, and JUGGLERS:
Our favorite room of the night was the one by CHELSEA LEA. Her installation basically consisted of two TENTS, an army of TROLL DOLLS, and several hundred EMPTY WHISKEY BOTTLES. While the tableau was deceptively simple and whimsical, it was layered with so much meaning, intentionally or not…
An assemblage of bungee cords, ropes, and lights seen through the window of one room:
Some live action video manipulation in one room while next door, people gather around a window to watch two dudes make…sandwiches?
