Hey Bulldog!

BULLDOG 0155

The annual BULLDOG INN ART SHOW is tomorrow night and we couldn’t be more excited. We blogged about the one we went to TWO YEARS AGO, which was totally surreal, bizarre, and a whole lot of fun. We went to last year’s Bulldog Inn Art Show as well, but, because we were preoccupied with running the MINI GALLERY at the time, we never got around to blogging about it…until now.

The art show is held at the titular Bulldog Inn, which is a seedy and rundown motel at the outskirts of Athens, Georgia. Every year, for the past handful of years, artists rent rooms from the Bulldog Inn and transform them into performance art and/or installation art pieces…unbeknownst to the regular customers who had the fortune/misfortune of renting a room on the same night, which adds to the edginess of the show. The mixing and mingling of artists, patrons, students, hipsters, townies, celebrities, movers, shakers, fakers, and various ne’er-do-wells adds to the spectacle of the night.

The first thing we saw was this “station” where you could trade a drawing for a piece organic fruit or vegetable. Missy traded a freshly-done drawing of TOFU BABY for a banana, which prompted some folks to take photos of Missy posing with her drawing and banana:

Our favorite room of the night was the one by CHELSEA LEA. Her installation basically consisted of two TENTS, an army of TROLL DOLLS, and several hundred EMPTY WHISKEY BOTTLES. While the tableau was deceptively simple and whimsical, it was layered with so much meaning, intentionally or not…

Blast From The Past: Getaway Bugs Are GO!

HAPPY FRIDAY! Here for your enjoyment is Missy performing with her old punk / noise / no-wave band, THE GETAWAY BUGS, at her own big BIRTHDAY BASH at CHATHAM COLLEGE, back in 1999. You’ll have to excuse the graininess of the video – it was recorded on my digital camera off our TV, from an already grainy VHS recording. I uploaded them to YouTube a while ago, but never got around to posting about them. There was much much more spectacular footage on the videotape, believe me (six or seven other bands performed at Missy’s party that night to a packed house) but I just taped my two favorite moments: The Getaway Bugs playing their “hit” song, “SCIENCE FICTION” – Missy’s ode to BILL NYE, THE SCIENCE GUY, which she originally did with an older band of hers called TUMMYBUG – and Missy on feedback duty, forcing her guitar into distorted yelps and moans. Missy organized the show at Chatham College, an all-women ivy league-style University in Pittsburgh and the show line-up featured mostly all-female or female-fronted bands. A ton of people showed up and judging from the action on the videotape, it was a stellar night out…

Weekend Wind-Down #179

DISNEYLAND 2118

DISNEYLAND 2134

For this week’s Christmas-themed Weekend Wind-Down, we’re flashing back all the way to December 2007. These photos taken during a parade at DISNEYLAND, have been languishing in my Flickr photostream since before the existence of this blog…what better time to share these images than now?

At the time, my sister, Cynthia, was working for the Disney corporation as a tax specialist. She was a week away from starting a new job with another company and told us that if we wanted to go to Disneyland for FREE, that she could hook us up. So, on a whim, we took a whirlwind weekend trip from to California. We went straight from the airport to Disneyland and got there just in time to catch their Christmas parade. Freakish storm clouds loomed overhead, making the whole scene even more surreal…but luckily, the rain never came…
